February 29, 2012

Dear Brothers and Sisters in Christ,

We write to ask your assistance as we have just learned of a vote in the United States Senate on the Respect for the Rights of Conscience Act is expected to take place in the next 24 hours. The Act has been attached as Amendment 1520 to the Transportation Authorization Bill.

Sen. Roy Blunt (R-MO), the primary sponsor of the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act, introduced the Act to modify the HHS regulations that will require Catholic institutions to provide coverage for abortion inducing drugs, sterilization and contraceptive services beginning in 2013.

The vote scheduled for tomorrow, March 1, 2012 is expected to be very close. We respectfully request that you contact our two U.S. Senators from North Carolina, Senator Kay Hagan and Senator Richard Burr to encourage their support of Amendment 1520, the Respect for Rights of Conscience Act.

The Act will provide a remedy to the serious threat to our religious liberty and conscience rights contained in the current mandate and will ensure that those who participate in the health care system retain the right to provide, purchase, or enroll in health coverage that is consistent with their religious beliefs and moral convictions.

Follow the link to send a message to your senator immediately.

With gratitude for your assistance in this important matter,

The Most Reverend Peter J. Jugis

Bishop of Charlotte

The Most Reverend Michael F. Burbidge
