CHARLOTTE — Nearly all public Masses in the Diocese of Charlotte have been cancelled since March 14, as our community does its part to combat the COVID-19 coronavirus pandemic. Bishop Peter Jugis has waived the obligation for Catholics to attend Sunday Mass (see below), and he encourages people to watch Mass on TV or online and make a spiritual communion. Below are links to watch Mass online – either live or recorded video, in English, Spanish or Vietnamese.
Bishop Jugis celebrated Holy Week and Easter in special liturgies which were streamed online live from St. Patrick Cathedral in Charlotte. Watch replays from the livestreams below starting on Palm Sunday, or watch live on the Diocese of Charlotte YouTube channel.
Note: This list is constantly changing as churches adapt to the evolving coronavirus situation, so please check directly with your parish for updates.

Sunday Mass obligation waived for Catholics of the diocese
CHARLOTTE — The faithful of the Diocese of Charlotte are excused from attending Holy Mass until further notice, Bishop Peter Jugis has announced. Public gatherings of more than 10 people at all parishes in the diocese have been prohibited, upon advice from state health officials.
In recognition of the public health risk posed by the COVID-19 coronavirus in our region, Bishop Jugis urges the faithful to consider the health and well-being of everyone and to follow precautions recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and public health authorities.
“With concern and affection for all the faithful and the larger community,” Bishop Jugis said, “I ask everyone to consider not only their own well-being but also that of others.”
In compliance with an executive order issued by North Carolina Gov. Roy Cooper on March 14, Bishop Jugis directed that most public Masses be cancelled and that all 19 diocesan schools suspend classes.
Cooper’s executive order originally banned public gatherings of more than 100 people. It also closed K-12 schools across the state for two weeks, effective March 16, in an ongoing effort to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 coronavirus. Read more.
The statewide crowd restrictions were subsequently tightened to 50 people, then finally to fewer than 10 people on March 17.
Bishop Jugis said he will re-evaluate the general dispensation from the Sunday Mass obligation sometime before Easter.
Catholics unable to attend Mass are encouraged to watch Sunday Mass on TV or online, or spend time in prayer individually and as a family.
Bishop Jugis offered a special videotaped Mass from St. Patrick Cathedral in Charlotte March 15 to provide spiritual comfort to those who are homebound and enable the people of the diocese to pray together through a virtual platform. Read about the Mass and watch it on the Diocese of Charlotte's YouTube channel.
All churches, schools and offices have increased their cleaning regimens and taken other measures in line with CDC guidance to prevent the spread of the coronavirus – including deep cleaning classrooms and high-traffic areas, frequently wiping down “high-touch” surfaces, removing missals and hymnals from the pews, and emptying holy water fonts.
Bishop Jugis previously suspended exchanging the Sign of Peace and distributing Holy Communion from the chalice at Mass, precautions that remain in effect.
To help limit the possible spread of the coronavirus, parishes, ministries and schools have also postponed or cancelled all non-essential gatherings and events.
Church employees and volunteers who have been exposed to the coronavirus or who are among those considered at-risk by the CDC are permitted to work from home where possible. Diocesan leaders have also relaxed sick leave policies for employees who contract the coronavirus, and waived health insurance deductibles and co-pays for coronavirus testing, so that no employee is financially burdened as a result.
“The health and well-being of our entire Church family is our highest concern,” Bishop Jugis said. “We will continue to monitor the situation closely and respond based on guidance from state health officials. We pray for all people affected by this illness and offer our prayers for a quick recovery.”
