072225 roofCLEMMONS — When it rained, it poured inside and out at Holy Family Parish in Clemmons. To abate the dripping water during torrential downpours, parishioners would break out the five-gallon buckets, and those buckets started getting more and more plentiful. It eventually became evident that a new roof was a necessity.

“It was a metal roof that was installed improperly, and it was leaking since day one,” said project manager Deacon John Harrison. “We had a lot of leaks. Anytime it rained hard, it leaked, and we tried many different fixes. Finally, we decided it could not be fixed, and we are going to put a new roof on it.”

After weeks of construction, the project is now about a third of the way done. The project is expected be completed within the next month, said project manager Deacon John Harrison.

The replacement roof was not a simple job. The church has many elevations, curves and a bell tower with a cross. At 15,000 square feet, it cost over $325,000 for materials, labor and a 20-year warranty.

“We started talking about this project last year, and we got seven different quotes. I knew nothing about metal roofs before we started this project, but I think I am pretty good with it now,” said Deacon Harrison. “We have two significant benefactors who came forward with a large amount of start-up money. And then we had some fundraising throughout the parish, a couple of extra special collections. We raised the money.”
