WINSTON-SALEM — Middle school students from Our Lady of Mercy School and St. Leo Catholic School gathered for a day of spiritual growth and reflection during their shared Advent retreat, Journey to Bethlehem. The event, hosted by Our Lady of Mercy, offered students an opportunity to deepen their faith and prepare their hearts for the celebration of Christmas.
The retreat began with talks led by Our Lady of Mercy priests, Pastor Cory Catron and Father José Palma Torres, focusing on the roles of Mary and Joseph in the Nativity story. The boys explored how St. Joseph's virtues -his humility, obedience, and steadfastness - serve as a model for their own lives. Meanwhile, the girls reflected on the qualities of the Blessed Virgin Mary, learning how to emulate her faith, courage, and devotion to God.
“We should not be afraid. The world often tries to convince us other things are the best path, and we should not be afraid to walk with God. We need to focus on knowing God and being closer to Him,” Father Torres explained during his session.
After the talks, students transitioned to small group reflections centered on key figures in the Nativity narrative. Guided by teachers from both schools, the students explored the roles of the angels, shepherds, and even the animals present at Jesus’s birth. These discussions encouraged participants to reflect on how these ordinary figures played extraordinary roles in God’s plan.
The retreat culminated in a session led by Father Catron, focusing on the wise men. Students learned about the Magi’s journey, their perseverance, and their willingness to offer their best gifts to Jesus. This was followed by adoration and confession, providing a sacred space for students to encounter God’s presence and mercy.
“Think of the virtues Mary represents,” Father Catron said. “Then think of the people in your life, your friends or even those who you dislike, and look at what virtues they have. We can always find the good in all of God’s people.”
The retreat left a lasting impression on all who attended. By walking in the footsteps of the key figures of the Nativity story, students gained a deeper appreciation of the true meaning of Advent and how they, too, can bring Christ’s light to the world.
This collaboration between Our Lady of Mercy and St. Leo Catholic schools highlights the shared mission of fostering a strong spiritual foundation in their students while building a sense of community across Winston-Salem Catholic schools.
