CHARLOTTE — From slime to pit stops, science took the fast lane at Our Lady of the Assumption School.
Students got a hands-on lesson in science and racing when the Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, and Mathematics (STEAM) team from Charlotte Motor Speedway visited the school.
The excitement began in the classroom, where students learned about polymers and how they're used in the racing industry, including cleaning up spills on pit road. Then things got a little messy as students put their new knowledge to work by making their own slime.
But the fun didn't stop there. Students headed outside, where they traded slime for tires and learned what it takes to be part of a NASCAR pit crew. Using a Bandolero race car, they practiced tire changes and discovered the importance of teamwork on race day.
From mixing slime to working on a race car, the visit gave students a chance to see how science and engineering support motorsports.
