Students learn about 9/11 and kindness at OLA

091225 ola 2CHARLOTTE — Students at Our Lady of the Assumption School raised the American flag to half‑mast Thursday in observance of the Sept. 11, 2001, terrorist attacks. Principal Liz Jenkins led a moment of silence and encouraged students to treat others with kindness in light of recent violence.

“It's hard when people don’t like us, when people don’t say nice things, when people don’t treat us the way we want to be treated,” Jenkins said. “But we live lives trying to be disciples of Christ.”

Students also shared reflections about turning the other cheek and pursuing love even in difficult circumstances. Jenkins, whose family has deep ties to the military and to the events following 9/11, said she hopes the observance becomes an annual tradition to teach both remembrance and kindness.
