CHARLOTTE — Walking through the front door at Our Lady of the Assumption School, it’s immediately clear that March has been a special month for students and staff.
Adorning the walls at the entrance are flags from different nations, and signs greet visitors with “hello” in various languages.
The artwork was just one aspect of a month-long celebration at OLA, which is one of the most diverse school communities in the Diocese of Charlotte Schools system.
OLA’s “Multicultural Month” events celebrated the many cultures that up their diverse family, giving students a chance to celebrate their culture while learning about the cultures of others.
Celebrations included lessons about saints from different parts of the world and weekly Masses that highlighted music, prayers and traditions from other places.
The month-long event concluded with a festival where students wore native clothing and sampled foods and drinks from the countries of their fellow classmates.
The day ended with a performance of stories and fables from around the world.
