WINSTON-SALEM — Una multitud de fieles repletó la Iglesia Nuestra Señora de la Merced para la celebración de la Liturgia de Jueves Santo en la que Jesucristo instituyó el sacramento de la Eucaristía.
En un altar sin ornamentos ni imágenes y con el tabernáculo vacío, el párroco, Padre David McCanless, celebró la Misa bilingüe, acompañado del vicario, Padre Miguel Sánchez, y el Diácono Serge Bernatchez sirviendo en el altar.
Después de las dos primeras lecturas, el Diácono Bernatchez y el Padre Sánchez leyeron el evangelio en inglés y español.
En su homilía, el Padre McCanless, refiriéndose a la negación de Pedro ante el pedido de Jesús de lavarle los pies, dijo que, en la lectura del evangelio de Juan 13:1-15, podríamos entender que San Pedro está confundido. “Pero no lo está”, aseguró.
“Pedro entiende perfectamente lo que Jesús está haciendo. Pero, Pedro no quiere al Mesías que lava los pies en vez de ganar honor en batallas. Esta no era su idea de Mesías. Él lo quería con poder y gloria, por eso no quiere que le lave los pies”, añadió.
Muchas veces, dijo, nosotros, al igual que Pedro, queremos un Mesías muy diferente, de acuerdo a nuestras expectativas, a nuestras necesidades.
“Esta noche, la lección que Pedro aprende, y al igual que él nosotros como discípulos, es que debemos de seguir a Dios en su camino de servicio y llenos de fe”, señaló.
Al igual que Pedro, subrayó, nosotros también tenemos miedo. “Espero que podamos entender a Jesús y aprender de Él”, finalizó.
Luego, se ubicaron doce sillas en las que se acomodaron a doce personas seleccionadas para que los sacerdotes McCanless y Sánchez les laven los pies.
Tras la breve ceremonia, la Misa continuó regularmente.
Al culminar la Misa, la señora Gloria Agüero, quien dijo asistir por primera vez a Misa en la parroquia, señaló estar “muy emocionada” con el inicio del Triduo Pascual, pero espera con ansias el Domingo de Resurrección, pues, “a quien adoramos es a un Cristo vivo, vivo entre nosotros y que nunca nos deja solos”.
